Discover Jesus as a family Session 5

Click here to download the outline and instructions for this session or just work your way through this page.

Welcome back!  In the last session we learnt about the Holy Spirit, God living inside us to help us live the way God intended us to live.  So what does this new life look like?  Read on and let's find out together!

Bible reading

Ever bought a new washing machine?  You know the basics, put the clothes in, add the powder, press the button, off it goes.  But to get the best out of it, you need to read the manufacturer's instruction booklet.  It's the same for our lives.  God created us, so it makes sense to read his instructions for our lives, the Bible.  Here is the part where it tells us what the first Christians did.

If you can, print it off and use highlighters to answer the questions!  Have fun!

On that day about three thousand believed his message and were baptized.  They spent their time learning from the apostles, and they were like family to each other.  They also broke bread and prayed together.

Let's have a look at each of these things in turn.

1. Baptism
Watch these two videos below

2.  Learning from the apostles
These first Christians were the ones who wrote the Bible.  So we can learn from them too, by reading it!  We recommend that you start with the book written by Mark.  It tells you about Jesus.  Christian means "little Jesus" so it is important to know what he did, so you can copy him!  If you don't have a Bible, try biblegateway.com. Or get in touch, we'd love to help!  Most of us find it helps to read a small part every day.  Try "Every Day with Jesus for new Christians" to get started!

3.  They were like family together
We are children of God, that makes us brothers and sisters - a family.  We call this family "church".  Just like a human family, we're all different with different gifts and talents, and sometimes we get on each other's nerves!, but we are better together!  Elsewhere the Bible describes it as being like a body.

So let's play Beetle drive!!  The link opposite has the instructions.

4.  They broke bread together
Some churches call this "communion" or "the Lord's supper".  It comes from the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his disciples.  Here's a video to refresh your memory.

It's when we take bread and wine, share it together, and thank Jesus for dying so we could be forgiven.  Why not find bread and juice, and share it together as a family?  Thank Jesus for all he has done for you.

5. They prayed

Prayer is just a conversation with God.  Remember he is in the room with you.  Remember he lives inside you by his Spirit, so he knows what's on your mind before you start!  He created you too, so he knows what's best for you.  A conversation is two-way though, so remember to spend time listening and not just talking!  We find it helpful to STOP and pray.

6.  They shared everything they had - verse 44
We believe that everything we have comes from God, so we need to be willing to pass it on.  Time for another game!

In the Old Testament, the part of the Bible before Jesus came, God's people were told to give 10% of everything they had, called a tithe, to support the work of the Temple.  In addition, they could then choose to make an extra offering.  Many Christians today give 10% of their income to the church, and then give more to other charities.  Ask God how he would like you to use your money as a family.

Remember, the greatest gift you have might actually be your time, or a particular skill that you have that you could share with others.

8.  Now what?
God has so much more for you!  We pray you find a local church where you feel part of the family, where you can share your gifts and talents and grow in your relationship with God.  And remember to pass this message on, so other people can Discover Jesus as a family too!!!
