A time for reflection and prayer from Summer 2020 from the 'I am' sayings of Jesus in John's gospel.
Prayer Station 1 – I am the gate
Iam the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. John 10:9
We often have to make decisions about which way to go, and the Bible makes it clear that God’s way is not always easy. But those who find it know the comfort of walking with the Lord through the difficult times and the joy of being with him in the happy times.
Pray for those who are struggling to find the way, and for those who are struggling on the way. Thank God for fellow ‘sheep’ who share our ‘pasture’.
Prayer: Lord You are the gate to life. Guide the steps of those who are looking for you and those who are struggling on the way. Help us to encourage and support one another and lead us all safely home. Amen
Prayer Station 2 – I am the good shepherd
Iam the good shepherd. John 10:11
Iam the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me. John 10:14
The good shepherd is different from the hired hand, because he cares about each sheep and stays with them to protect them from danger.
Thank God for all the times you have been aware of His special protection and pray for those in danger today. Pray especially for those on the ‘front lines’ in the battle against COVID 19. Pray for doctors, nurses, and all hospital staff, including hospital chaplains and volunteers. Pray for carers in care homes and in the community and for those keeping essential services going. Pray for those facing persecution for their faith. Pray for those tasked with shepherding others, especially those in national and local government.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you that You are the good shepherd, that you provide for us and defend us. Thank you that you gave Your life for us. Help us to listen to your voice, Lord, to recognise your guidance and to follow your leading. Amen
Prayer Station 3 – I am the way and the truth and the life
Iam the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
Jesus is the way to the Father; it is only through Him that we can be in a right relationship with God. Pilate famously asked, “What is truth?” Jesus was innocent of the crimes he was accused of; one truth Pilate did not understand was that He was the only man who was free of sin, the only one who could make the sacrifice to end all sacrifice. Jesus is the life, and gives abundant life to all who trust in Him. He leads us away from everything that spoils and damages our lives, and He helps us to restore our relationships, especially our relationship with our heavenly Father.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord Jesus that you loved us so much that you endured torture and death on the cross for us. Amazing grace! “Love so amazing, so divine, demands my life, my soul, my all.” Help us all to come to the Father through you, and to follow your truth, and to live your life. Amen
Prayer Station 4 – I am the bread of life
Iam the bread of life. John 6:48
Iam the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my body, which I will give for the life of the world. John 6:51
What is essential to life? How is Jesus the living bread?
Thank God for all the essentials and all the extras you enjoy. Pray for those who are literally hungry, and for those who hunger for love. Pray for those seeking to end poverty and injustice in the sharing of the world’s resources. Pray for those involved in food banks and provision of meals for those in need due to lockdown. Pray for those who have lost their jobs, or their sources of income, and for employers trying to keep afloat to avoid redundancies. Ask God to show you what you can do to make a difference. Say the Lord’s prayer, and think about ‘daily bread’.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you told us that you are the bread of life. You were talking to people who had come to you hungry for food, hungry for guidance, hungry for healing; you fed their bodies and their spirits. Help us to come to you with whatever hunger we have. Help us to know how to feed other people in body and spirit. Thank you for feeding us every day. Amen
Prayer Station 5 – I am the light of the world
Iam the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12
Where is God’s light shining today? Where is there darkness that needs His light?
Think about situations where light is needed and bring them to the Lord in prayer.
Pray for those whose situations are made worse by lockdown, especially for those suffering domestic violence. Take a tealight, remove the plastic strip and switch it on, remembering as you do so that God is answering out prayers and bringing light into dark places. Take the light home with you as a reminder.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the light of the world and You want us to reflect your light. Lord, you are the light which sometimes shines bright as day and sometimes is enough for us to see the next step in front of us. We ask that our light will shine in such a way that others are drawn to You. Amen
Prayer Station 6 – I am the true vine
Iam the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. John 15:1
Iam the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5
It takes several years for a vine to produce fruit. It’s all about being connected. If we are not connected to the source of light and food, we wither and die. Jesus encourages us to remember that we are grafted into Him, the true vine, and therefore we are connected to the light and food we need to grow. We have to experience pruning, which can be painful, but the fruit we produce will be worth it.
Think of people whose fruit you have benefitted from and thank God for them. Ask God to show you where you are producing fruit and where you need to be pruned, and thank Him for working in your life.
Prayer: Thank you, Lord that you are the gardener and that you help us to grow, sometimes by pruning as well as by feeding and watering. Thank you that you want us to bear fruit for you. Help us to show the fruit of Your Spirit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Help us to stay connected to you and be a blessing to those around us. Amen
Prayer Station 7 – I am the resurrection and the life
I am the resurrection and the life. John 11:25
Jesus is the resurrection and the life. Because He died in our place, we can be forgiven for the wrong things we have done. Because He lives, we can also live forever with Him. Praise and worship our wonderful Saviour, who has defeated sin and death and is King over all Kings. Hallelujah!
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that You have loved us from the beginning of everything, that you have given us life now and life even after we die. Thank you that You will one day take away all the sadness and badness that we see in the world and that You will make all things new and all things better. Amen
